I have no first hand experience with these units but from what I've heard and read they have a pretty good track record and are pretty easy to install and can be done by most people with average mechanical ability. In most cases this involves changing the carrier which will involve re-setting the tooth contact pattern ( a job usually best left to someone with the proper experience and tools).Ī fairly recent developement is the Richmond Gear PowerTrax locker units which can be installed without having to remove the carrier (avoiding having to reset the gears). or a limited slip diff (posi-trac)."īasically same thing different name (unless you're talking about a spool which actually locks both axels together and are not recommended for street use).Īs far as which cars to look for, I'm not sure what years the OD units were first installed but the easy way to see is look at the gear shift indicator in the dash and see if it's a 3 speed (P R N D 2 1) or OD (P R N O D 2 1)Īnother option that a lot of people overlook is to convert your existing rearend to a Posi.provded the rearend is in good shape to begin with and has a gear ratio you like. I dont have the install instructions tho, and when i pulled it it came out like a jigsaw puzzle. I have a richmond power-trax locker im not using, its sitting on a shelf, it was in my car and i didnt like the way it engaged and disengaged, all lockers are notourious for popping when they disengage, but it worked fine otherwise. the only problem is it is no longer a differential, both axles are basically locked together and its hard on tires when you turn corners. One other thing you may want to consider is and its the cheapest route, is a mini spool, it uses the factory carrier but replaces the spider gears and just bolts in, you dont modify anything. the only difference was the in the outside of the housing (s10 was a leaf spring rear end, G bodies were 4 link, and the width, 2wheel drive s10 was narrower than 4x4 by 4-6 inches i believe) Rear Axle Ratios Ratio 2.56:1 - Tooth Combination 41,16 Ratio 2.73:1 - Tooth Combination 41,15 Ratio 3.07:1 - Tooth Combination 43,14 Ratio 3.08:1 - Tooth Combination 40,13 Ratio 3.08:1 - Tooth Combination 37,12 Ratio 3.31:1 - Tooth Combination 43,13 Ratio 3.36:1 - Tooth Combination 37,11 Ratio 3. theyre also a 7.5 inch rear end and the ring and pinions, carriers bearings etc are the same. If youre not looking to put too much power to it ive seen people use the Gov-lock rear ends out of late 80s to late 90s S10 pickups.
